ISAAC’s Technology Innovation

In the challenging and ever-evolving scenario of ICT, the main technological target and innovation of ISAAC is strategic and methodological – to provide a framework for intelligent, concerted ICT development in the cultural heritage and tourism sectors of the European competitive and sustainable destinations. The operationalisation of ICTs as a mean of interpreting cities to tourists and citizens in an effective way, offering meaningful and stimulating insights to users requires innovation on several levels. Under ISAAC, this will occur in three main areas:
  • Cultural tourism as a mean of sustainable heritage
  • Intelligent environments for promoting cities’ cultural heritage
  • On-line communities for cultural tourist destinations

The technology innovation of ISAAC falls in five priority areas:

Mobile technologies - ISAAC will use the potentials of mobile technologies to enhance the links between local heritage and tourism, since smart mobile vices can accompany the tourist all along her/his tour path, providing the right information at the right moment. For ISAAC, mobile devices will host innovative creative applications, for example games involving the tourist who is willing to discover the richness of the territory, and local citizens, who may act as wizards or advisors, or similarly are ‘tourists’ in their own community.

Smart agent technologies - ISAAC will create a virtual repository for the integration of a large amount of information, with a reliable and secure framework, distributed among many sources within a common hypermedia structure.

World-wide adoption - ISAAC will create a system with which users can experience the advantages enjoyed by tourists and other users without visiting the physical locations concerned. This will not only assist social and cultural inclusion, but also promote engagement with cultural heritage and thus enhance empathy, stewardship, and visitation generally.

Context-based knowledge handling and intelligence - ISAAC will apply knowledge modelling and cognitive reasoning techniques to the information base to create links between context-associated information to support either manual or automated decision-making processes and allow user profiling and individual customisation maintenance to be controlled by the intelligent agent system.

Mobile / Wireless full multimedia - ISAAC will create a framework which extends interface components from common PC-based applications to homogeneous machine-independent platforms, for each level of the interface. It will apply state-of-the-art techniques used in mobile agent technology to allow intelligence feedback for individual users or organisations to be independent of location.

ISAAC’s Contribution to Standards

ISAAC will comply with and contribute to five sets of national and international standards and activities.
  • Multimedia standards
  • W3C and OGC standards
  • Service standards
  • Design and working standards
  • Communication standards
