Role inside ISAAC
As the ISAAC’s Coordinator, FZK-ITAS is in charge of all project management activities, directs the project’s scientific development, and leads the workpackage on Governance and Destination Development. The institute is also involved in multiple research tasks such as: review of current digitisation issues; user studies; cultural heritage indexing system; IT tourist satisfaction assessment framework; IT decision-making methods and tool, and the ISAAC e-governance framework. FZK-ITAS also plays a key role in the communication, exploitation and dissemination activities of the ISAAC project.

Field of activities
As the host of the Office of Technology Assessment (TAB) of the German Parliament and one of the 22 member institutes of the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe of the Hermann-von-Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, FZK-ITAS is a lead European institution in science, technology and environmental research and policy assessment. The ‘New Technologies and Information Society’ (IST) and ‘Sustainable Development’ (SD) are two strategic areas of interest. In IST work focuses on the role of the information and communication technologies (ICT) on society, economy, public management and policies, and the globalisation of companies and markets. A special attention is placed on e-governance, exploring how ICT have and will continue to impact the progress of our societies and nations in the knowledge society and how e-governance fosters new and deeper citizen involvement within the governing process of organisations, states and communities. In urban sustainable development, the institute is committed through its work to supporting the gathering and sharing of knowledge, information and data in order to increase the understanding of how governance can strengthen the fundamental partnership between the public sector and the private citizens and help achieve more sustainable and knowledge cities in the new Century. Research in sustainable tourism and cultural heritage in particular aims helping building intelligent and competitive urban destinations through smart tourism, new media and cultural heritage.

FZK-ITAS has recently coordinated and participated in several European projects from the above areas such as the FP5 SUT-Governance STREP Project: Sustainable Urban Tourism: Involving local agents and partnerships for new forms of governance; EU FP6 PICTURE STREP Project:: Pro-active Management of the Impact of Cultural Tourism upon Urban Resources and Economies (Innovative governance styles for an integrated urban cultural tourism); EU FP6 IST IntelCities Integrated Project (e-City governance policy development); EU FP5 IST Intelcity Roadmap Project (ICT and sustainable cities).
