eTourism: Using technology to innovate in tourism and Cultural Heritage
Most Tourism Destinations around the world have adopted or developed ICTs to promote their tourism offering.
The World Wide Web on the Internet has emerged as the pervasive and robust platform for the tourism destination management.
The Web 2.0 and consumer generated content is developing those issues further and develops them on a global scale. Only destinations that can take full advantage of the opportunities will be able to capitalise on the benefits in the future. Technology enables a great degree of innovation in Cultural Heritage interpretation, education, conservation and management.
Interpretation in particular must address the different needs of visitors and enable each market segment to find sufficient information to enhance their visit.
ICTs offer unlimited space and can use a wide range of multimedia formats such as photographs, diagrams, videos and virtual reality representations. The use of hypertext facilitates inter-linkages between interrelated themes, exhibits and artefacts enabling visitors to explore Cultural Heritage sites in greater depth.
Hypertext links also allow audience segments to be targeted simultaneously and in different depths. For example children may learn from animated cartoons, whilst historians from expert researchers. Site Management is also revolutionized with technology through services offered Pre- During-After the visit and by engaging visitors to a journey of exploration, understanding and engagement.
Technology represents both challenges and opportunities and opens horizons for a new interactive era in Cultural Heritage.
